Northwest
Woman Magazine
Charity Doyl, the new editor-in-chief of Northwest Woman Magazine, has an
impressive resume to say the least. This woman is an accomplished writer, having
been published in numerous regional, national, and international publications.
In addition, Charity is the founding director of the Beyer Foundation, more information
about which can be found on the web at www.beyermuseum.com
and founder of Harvest Rain Press. Happily, Charity has shared some of her fascinating
story with us:
What type of business do you have? Regional Women's Magazine.
What products/services do you offer? Northwest Woman Magazine is a
bimonthly publication created to empower women with resources, information and
inspiration to support their personal growth. In addition, Northwest Woman hosts
a series of exciting gatheringsthe Northwest Woman Kindred Connection Events.
Our gatherings are designed to educate, entertain and help women connect.
When and why did you launch your business? Northwest Woman Magazine
was started in February 2001 by an amazing woman, Vicki Dar, who envisioned a
publication that's "More than a Magazine...it's a friend!" The
idea centers around topics and issues discussed by women when they get together
with other women. In January 2005, for the sake of her (love) life, Dar sold
the publication to Charity Doyl, who has been an instrumental facet in the initial
phase of Northwest Woman Magazine.
How many people in your company? Editor: Charity Doyl, Contributing
Writers: too many to mention! Administrative Assistant: Ms. Tiny Zeissler, Graphic
Designer: Mr. Mervyn Soriano, Advertising Reps: Dawn Driscoll, Lori Pettit and
Jeanene Phelps, Photographer: Annette Wren and Web Goddess: Norma Maxwell
Where is your office located? Our office is located at Suite 102, E.
801 Second Ave. Spokane, WA.
What is the most rewarding part of running your business? The most
rewarding part of running this business is the opportunity to hear the success
stories from Northwest Woman readers who have applied the information, tips and
ideas they have learned in their personal life.
Is there anything you would do differently next time? At different
times in my life,I have made poor choices and have learned not to lose sleep
over it, learn from my mistakes and move on without looking back. Mistakes is
part of the growing, learning process and an opportunity to strengthen your character
with the ability to admit...I goofed up!
Have you learned any other lessons in your venture you would like to share?
One of the greatest lessons I learned as an entrepreneur is to never make
hasty decisions or promises you can't keep. Always take the time to seek legal
counsel, research the topic, ask lots of questions and avoid making snap decisions;
as every decision you makebig or smallwill affect your business and
your integrity as a person.
What "words of wisdom" or advice would you like to share? My
grandfather, Ramon Bagatsing, was the Mayor of Manila for about 20 years. He
always encouraged me to dream big and to not be afraid to pursue it. Along the
way jealous people and circumstances will cause you to stumble and fall, but
pick yourself up, wipe the tears and dirt of your face, ask the Lord to help
you choose and win your battles, smile and keep moving on.
What is your vision for the future of your business? For the next 3-5
years, my vision is to expand the readership of Northwest Woman Magazine into
the regions of Washington State, Idaho, Montana and Oregon; after that...I've
got the whole world to conquer!
What is your educational background? In 1986, I attended the University
of the Philippines at Los Banos, in pursuit of a doctorate degree in Veterinary
Medicine. Because of my marriage which caused me to migrate to the USA, I was
unable to finish my course. But my heart has always been in writing, history
and anthropology and I taught myself in these subjects while raising three beautiful
daughters. It would be safe to say, I'm a bonafide graduate from the College
of Hard Knocks!
