Hard work, true grit, and a strong confidence in his ability to run his own
business led Fess Schultes to start his now thriving commercial siding business
nearly ten years ago. Pro-Side, Inc. is securely positioned as a top commercial
siding company in our region. We know Fess is a man of few words, but we asked
him to share some of his experience with us, and he was kind enough to oblige:
What type of business do you have? Commercial Siding/Construction Business.
What products/services do you offer? We provide services for General
Contractors—primarily exterior siding for large commercial projects.
When and why did you launch your business? I launched my business in
1996 because I was tired of working for other people when I knew I had the potential
to be successful on my own.
How many people in your company? From eight to ten, depending on the
time of year.
Where is your office located? Our business office is located in our
home, in Cheney, Washington.
What is the most challenging aspect of running your business? Not
to oversimplify, but honestly, managing employees is number one, managing finances
is number two.
What is the most rewarding part of running your business? Definitely
to see the progress we have made over the years. Also, to see the progress on
a job through to completion—a job well done—that is satisfying.
Is there anything you would do differently next time? Right from the
start, I would say educate yourself to think like a businessperson and manager.
Have you learned any other lessons in your venture you would like to share?
As I said, self education. You can't learn too much about how to keep yourself
positioned for success. Wherever you are, there is always room for improvement.
What is your vision for the future of your business? We have established
ourselves as one of a few top commercial siding companies in the region, and
we want to keep it that way.
What is your educational background? I attended college and pursued
college rodeo. My best education has come from starting and running my own business
these past ten years.
What is your employment/business background? I have worked in construction
since I can remember and have owned and operated two construction companies of
my own.
Is there anyone who has helped or inspired you to launch your own business?
No, not initially. I can tell you that if it weren't for my wife, Tamara—who
has managed everything from customer relations, to accounting, office management,
and business development for our company for the past eight years —we would
not be where we are today. She is the person who inspires me.
